In old Brazilian railway stations, the bilheteiro (ticket cabinet) was the piece of furniture used by the employees responsible for selling and managing train tickets. Usually located inside the ticket office, it served to store, organize, and facilitate the handling of printed tickets.
Made of wood, the bilheteiro featured dividers and compartments that held tickets according to their destination, class (first or second), and type (one-way, return, or round trip).
The Pires do Rio Railway Museum preserves four original examples of these ticket cabinets, dating from the 1920s to the 1950s. Each one represents a stage in the administrative history of Brazilian railways and the daily life of the old train stations.
